ADMISSION RULES FOR ADMISSION INTO FIRST YEAR OF
PURVA MADHYAMA IN BHOT BAUDDHA DARSHANA/TIBETAN
CHIKITSA YIDYA /TIBETAN JYOTISH VIDYA

• Candidates seeking admission in the P.M.1st year in this Institute will have to possess the academic qualification of class VIII passed from any recognized school with knowledge of Tibetan Language equivalent to class VIII standard. Candidates are also required to possess knowledge of English or Hindi equivalent to standard VIII.
• The eligible candidates will have to appear in an entrance examination. The entrance examination will consist of two written papers.
  
  • Tibetan Language.
    
  • English or Hindi language (one language to be selected by the candidates), each paper will be marked out of 100 marks, and will be of 3 hours duration, in accordance with the syllabus outlined in this booklet.
    
• The passing marks in the entrance examination will be 35 marks for each paper.
• Any candidate who scores 75% or above in the Tibetan Language paper but fails in Hindi/English shall be entitled to get grace marks in Hindi/English, upto a maximum of 5 marks.
• Only those candidates will be eligible for admission, who have clearly passed the entrance examination.
• At the time of admission each Sampradaya will be allotted a quota of 8 students except for the Bon Sampradaya, which will be allotted 5 students.
• The chikitsa Vidya and Jyotish sections will be allotted a quota of 7 students each.
• Admission of girl students will be subject to availability of accommodation in the girls' hostel.
• Selection for admission in each Sampradaya and in the Chikitsa Vidya and Jyotish sections will be strictly on merit basis, which will be based on the scores obtained in the entrance examination.
• If any portion of the quota in each of the Sampradayas or the Chikitsa Vidya or Jyotish sections is left vacant, this portion of the quota will be assigned to any other Sampradaya or Chikitsa/Jyotish sections purely depending upon the merit of the candidate, next in line, in the general merit-list of the entrance examination.
• The total intake of students (including non-scholarship candidates) may not exceed 51 in number in any given year.
• Admission of SC/ST and handicapped candidates will be according to the UGC guidelines.
• For the purpose of admission, monks, nuns and laity are treated equal and admission is based solely upon merit as reflected in the entrance examination. However, a candidate who joins the Institute as a monk or nun may not disrobe until graduation; a student who disrobes before that time will be expelled from the Institute.
• The admission of students admitted will be considered provisional, and will be confirmed only upon submission of their original School Leaving Certificates /(Transfer Certificate), Character Certificate from the Institution last attended, marksheets etc within fifteen days from the release of the list of the candidates offered admission. Candidates, who are unable to submit the required certificates/documents within the stipulated time, must submit an application to the office along with a recommendation from the head of the concerned Sampradaya/section. The admission committee may, after examining the authenticity of the case, grant the candidate an additional fifteen days beyond the period specified for the submission of original documents. If the candidate is unable to submit the required documents even within this extended period, his/her admission will be treated as invalid and the next candidate in line will be offered admission.
• The admission of students admitted will be considered provisional until they have been examined and certified by the Institute's medical personnel as being fit to pursue their course of study at the Institute.
• The final confirmation notice, naming the admitted candidates, will be circulated after the orientation talk by the Hon'ble Director or his representative from the Office.

overview of CUTS library

The Shantarakshita library is the central library system of Central University of Tibetan Studies, Sarnath Varanasi. It is a unique information resources centre for scholars of Tibetan and Buddhist studies which came into existence with the inception of the University in the year 1967.
This library is named after a great Indian Bhuddhist scholar Acharya Shantarakshita of the Nalanda University, who visited Tibet in the 8th century for the cause of dharma.
The library has special collection of Buddhist canonical works in Tibetan language translated from Sanskrit and other Indian languages. Contents of Buddhist manuscripts in Sanskrit and Tibetan languages are preserved in different form and formats such as printed, xylographs, digital and micro form etc in this library. The library has separate sections for such forms of collection. The library collection in the fields of Buddhism, Tibetan and Himalayan studies and allied subjects is point of attraction for scholars at home and abroad.
At present the library holds approximately 87000 printed books & xylographs 2000 bound volumes of journals, 7712 electronic documents and 9742 titles of microfiches and films.
The library is well equipped with latest ICT infrastructure, providing library services based on the multilingual bibliographical database of the library collections.
Library is a member of the UGC-INFONET program and has the full text access to the online journals of Springer and databases of ISID and JCCC via IP authenticated online access. In addition to print and online documents, library possesses a rich collection of Microfiches, Microfilms and Audio Video documents and xylogaphys of the concerned subjects.
The collections of the Shantarakshita library are developing in accordance with the objectives of CUTS, which is declared as "University of national importance" by the Government of India.

Library Committee

Policy level decisions and documents for the development and smooth functioning of library are being approved by the Library committee which is the apex decision making body of the library. The composition of the Library Committee is as follows:

Central University for Tibetan Studies

The Central University for Tibetan Studies (CIHTS) (Tibetan: ཝ་ཎ་མཐོ་སློབ, Wylie: wa Na mtho slob) is a university institute founded in Sarnath, Varanasi, India in 1967, as an autonomous organization under Union Ministry of Culture.
The CIHTS was founded by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru in consultation with Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama, with the aim of educating the youths of Tibet in exile in Dharamsala and the Himalayan border students, as well as with the aim of retranslating into Sanskrit and translating into Hindi and other modern Indian languages lost Indo-Buddhist Sanskrit texts that now exist only in Tibetan.
Originally it functioned as a special constituent wing of Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi. In the early 1970s the Government of India reviewed the progress of the institute and decided to accord it a status of an autonomous body under the Department of Culture, Ministry of Education, Government of India in 1977 with 100% financial support from the Indian government.
The institute steadily progressed and the Indian government declared it a Deemed University on April 5, 1988. The institute is currently headed by Prof. Ngawang Samten, assisted by faculty members, with the goal of achieving excellence in the field of Tibetology, Buddhology and Himalayan Studies.
On 14 January 2009 this institute was officially declared as a university and the inauguration was made by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama. Now the name of the university is Central University of Tibetan Studies.
